How to Choose a Career after 10th & 12th

For many students, choosing a career path to follow after the 10th and 12th board exams can be incredibly stressful. Many young adults haven’t found their calling just yet. But, they’re constantly worried that they may make the wrong decision. This often leads to children forcing themselves to study subjects that they aren’t interested in. In most cases, this leads to bad scores, fatigue, and a constant sense of worry. If you are one of the many who are confused about what the future might hold for you, don’t worry. We’re here to help you find a way to evaluate your options and pick the best possible career path.

Think About Your Strengths and Weaknesses

We’re sure you’ve heard the popular phrase ‘Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life’. Sadly, at the age of 15 or 17, most of us don’t know what we love. If we do, we may not know how to make a career out of it. If you talk to a career counsellor, they will most likely tell you to focus on your strengths and weaknesses. List down what you’re good at, what you’re average at and what you need a little help with. Then, make a list of all the things you love doing. Find an overlap between what you’re good at and what you love doing. This will help you find a career that hardly feels like a job.

Picking the Right Subjects after the 10th

In India, you can choose to study Science, Arts or Commerce at the junior college level. Now that you’ve spent a few years delving into complex scientific theories and mathematics formulae, you may have a better understanding of what your strengths and weaknesses are. Pick the stream that best suits your capabilities. Don’t pick science just because it’s for the ‘intelligent’ ones. And you don’t have to pick commerce because you think you have to join the family business after graduation. If you pick the stream that most aligns with your interests, you will be able to study better and achieve better results in your 12th exams.

What to Choose after 12th?

After the 12th, you have more of an opportunity to focus on career-based courses. Aspiring engineers can try for a spot in one of the top IIT colleges in India, while creative writers can join colleges known for their Arts programmes. Of course, securing a seat in a speciality law, medical or engineering college is not easy. It requires months of competitive exam preparation. And sometimes, it needs more like good recommendations and test scores.

Choosing after 12th class

The decisions you make after the 10th and 12th will have a bearing on the rest of your life. These crucial years will dictate your career path, so it’s important to choose wisely.
