CSEET – The Entrance Exam after Class 12 to Become a Company Secretary

If your dream is to become a Company Secretary (CS), then you must know that it requires a lot of effort. You must also be aware of what it takes to be one. The first step is to appear for the CS entrance exam – that is the CS Executive Entrance Test (CSEET). This exam is conducted by the Institute of Company Secretaries (ICSI). It is a qualifying exam to register for the CS Executive Programme. Now, let us see what the CSEET is all about and what it constitutes.

What is CSEET?

First, it is important to understand what exactly this exam is all about. As mentioned earlier, the CSEET is the qualifying exam that directly admits CS aspirants to the CS Executive Programme. It is conducted four times a year.

Eligibility criteria for CSEET

Now let us see who is eligible to appear for CSEET.

  • Anyone who has cleared Class 12 (any stream) is eligible to take this exam, and every CS aspirant must go through it to pursue the CS course.
  • However, Fine Arts students are not eligible to take this test.
  • All Graduates / Postgraduates also need to appear for the CSEET to register for the CS Executive Programme.
  • Candidates must not be less than 17 years of age on the date that they applied.

The exemptions

While most have to take this entrance exam, some aspirants are exempted from taking it. Let us see who these candidates are.

  • Students who have passed the Company Secretaries Foundation Programme
  • Students who have passed The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India’s (ICAI) final course
  • Students who have cleared the final course of The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI)
  • Graduates with a minimum of 50% in their final exam
  • Postgraduates

The subjects

The CSEET exam is conducted on a single day and consists of four subjects –

  • Business Communication
  • Legal Aptitude and Logical Reasoning
  • Economics and Business Environment
  • Current Affairs, Presentation and Communication Skills

The exam pattern

Now let us take you through the exam pattern of this entrance test.

  • The CSEET is a computer-based test (CBT)
  • It is conducted through the online mode
  • The duration is 120 minutes
  • The total number of marks is 170
  • The Viva Voce on Presentation and Communication Skills is 15 minutes
  • All questions are multiple-choice questions (MCQs) or objective-type ones

The score

The marks secured in the CBT are calculated, totalling to meet the final score out of 200 marks. The criteria to pass the CSEET is a minimum of 40% in each paper and an aggregate of 50%.

CSEET is a tough qualifying exam, and lakhs of students take it each year, making it highly competitive as well. Students start preparing for it at least a year in advance. Taking mock tests is an effective and integral part of students’ prep journey as it familiarises them with the overall exam pattern. The ICSI, CSEET conducting body, also conducts the CSEET mock test, which we recommend every CSEET candidate must take.
