Fun Ways to Get Your Kids Back Into Routine After Summer

The monsoon is almost here. This means that summer is nearly over, and it’s time for kids to gear up for a new school year. Of course, given the current pandemic, a lot of children will start this academic year online. This could make it challenging for parents to get their kids into a normal routine. If you’re struggling to get your children up and ready for school – online or otherwise – here are some tips that can help!

Start with an Evening Routine

Go to bed early

Students will only be able to get up on time if they go to bed early and get a good night’s rest. This means that you need to have a good evening routine in place. Start by ensuring your child has dinner at least 2 or 3 hours before bed. Ideally, the whole family should have an early dinner together. After dinner, engage your child in a fun and relaxing activity such as reading or working on a puzzle. By sticking to the same routine, you can help your child get ready for bed on time.

Cut the Screen Time

Most of us watch television or scroll through our phones just before bed. But this is doing us all more harm than good. Watching a screen just before bed can make it very difficult for your child to go to sleep. This is because the blue light emitted from digital screens interrupts the production of melatonin. Melatonin is what causes us to feel sleepy. For a child to be able to function properly, they need to enjoy at least 8 hours of sleep every night. Screen time can hamper the quality of sleep, so you should restrict it as much as possible. If your child is between the ages of 6 and 13, they shouldn’t get more than 2 hours of screen time per day. While this may not be possible for children learning online, it’s a good idea to keep their recreational screen time down to a minimum.

Make Mornings Easier

Your morning routine is just as important as your evening routine. Your child should wake up early, with enough time to get ready and have a good breakfast. It’s important that you don’t rush your child in the morning. If you do, it could affect their mood for the rest of the day. To make things easier for young children, you could create a fun song for them to sing while they brush their teeth and get dressed.

Prioritise Tasks

Even with a good routine, it can be difficult for your child to focus on their schoolwork at the start. For online courses especially, it is important that you keep motivating your child. The best way to do this is by helping them plan their goals and prioritise their tasks. You can provide them with a reward every time they accomplish a goal. This is one of the best studying tactics for online learning in general.

Preparing your child for the upcoming school year isn’t just about academics. It’s also about making sure they have a good night’s rest and an easy morning routine. These small tips could help your child focus and do better in school.
