IIT Madras, Chennai
Situated in the city of Chennai and the state of Tamil Nadu, IIT Madras comes out tops in the list with a score of 89.41. Sprawling across over 630 acres, this institute was established in the 1950s by the government. It has topped the list thrice consecutively and boasts a highly qualified and extremely experienced faculty of more than 540 members. Currently, it can accommodate almost 9,000 students, which also includes international students, and offers courses in several fields of engineering, technology, sciences, and management. It also has 16 academic departments, almost 100 labs and some research centres. Along with academics, it lays a lot of stress on research as well. IIT Bombay, Mumbai
With almost 70 courses in 17 streams, it is perhaps one of the best IITs to pursue a course of your choice. It enjoys an all-India ranking of 87.66. Established in 1958 in the Powai, in Mumbai city and the state of Maharashtra, it boasts excellent education and research. In 1961, it was declared as the Institute of National Importance by the Indian government. With a sprawling campus of over 550 acres, it is the first IIT that was founded with international assistance. It has a student strength of approximately 12,000 students, and almost 75% of its students have been top rankers for the last five years. It enjoys a premium status among the IITs. IIT Kharagpur, Kharagpur
Established in 1951 in Kharagpur, West Bengal, this IIT is the first-ever institute in the country. Inaugurated by the first Union Minister of Education in independent India, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, it sprawls over 2,000 acres. It boasts of its own curriculum and lays stress on the overall development of its students. It also has the biggest library in the country that stocks over 3.5 lakh books, documents and research papers. With a score of 83.91, it is considered one of the premium IITs and has a total student strength of more than 12,500. IIT Delhi, New Delhi
Located in Hauz Khas, in the city of New Delhi and the state of Delhi, this institute was established in 1961 and is spread across over 320 acres. Fourth on the list, it has a score of 82.02 and provides top-notch facilities and teaching resources. It was known as the College of Engineering and Technology earlier and was bestowed with the IIT tag in 1963. The Indian government declared it as the Institute of National Importance under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act of 1963. The institute has six streams, namely Science, IT, engineering, Management, Arts, and Design. The student strength crosses over 7,000 at this institute and it is considered as a premium college that offers an excellent infrastructure and faculty.
IIT Kanpur, Kanpur
Launched by the Indian government in 1959, this IIT is spread over 1,000 acres. Situated in Kanpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh, it scores 81.07, standing in fifth place in the all-India ranking. It is a premium IIT and falls in the 500-1000 institutes in the QS world university rankings. With a world-class faculty, infrastructure and laboratories, it is opted for by top rankers. It also has affiliations with some of the top-tier global institutes for academic and research initiatives. The Indian government declared this IIT as an Institute of National Importance in 1959. Foremost in research, this IIT is known to place its students in top international organisations as well.
IIT Roorkee, Roorkee
Located in Roorkee in the state of Uttarakhand, this IIT is spread over 365 acres and scores 78.68 in the all-India ranking. Launched in 1847, it was initially known as the College of Civil Engineering at Roorkee (1847–1854), later changing to Thomason College of Civil Engineering (1854–1947) and then the University of Roorkee (1947–2001). In 2001, it turned into the seventh IIT in the country under an ordinance issued by the government. This makes it the oldest engineering institute in the country. It offers a plethora of programmes through its one school, three academic centres, four supporting units, and seven academic service centres. With a focus on quality research, it has a student strength of over 8.000 and is considered a top-notch IIT with national and international rankings.
IIT Hyderabad, Hyderabad
Established in 2008 across 576 acres in the state of Telangana, this IIT stands in seventh place with a score of 77.22. With a range of academic programmes, it is known for its research and great faculty as well. Its modern infrastructure makes it a popular choice among aspiring IITians. Its total student strength of more than 3,000 enjoys pursuing its dream at one of the best technology and science institutes in the country. This institute is also well-known for its top placements. Besides, it has been ranked as a top one among the IITs in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). IIT Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad
Sprawled over 400 acres along the banks of the Sabarmati River, IIT Gandhinagar is located in the city of Ahmedabad and the state of Gujarat. Standing eighth in the all-India ranking with a score of 75.20, it was established in 2008. Launched as one of the eight new IITs, it is the only institute from the state that ranks among the foremost 1,000 universities in the world. It offers a range of courses in not only engineering and the sciences but also humanities and the social sciences. It has a student strength of close to 2,000 students and boasts of an excellent faculty. The Institute focuses on a holistic approach and cutting-edge research.
IIT Ropar-Rupnagar, Rupnagar
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) established this IIT in 20028 in Ropar-Rupnagar in the state of Punjab. Spread across more than 500 acres, this institute is one of the eight newer IITs and is ranked ninth with a score of 74.88. With a superlative faculty, it has a student strength of around 1500. This institute is known for its comfortable facilities, be it recreational, healthcare, sports, or anything else. It boasts of an excellent faculty and a great library, and its mission is to ‘foster a transformative learning environment and a culture of excellence enabling the creation of knowledge and development of socially responsible, enterprising leaders contributing significantly to national progress and humanity’.

Launched in 2008 as an Institute of National Importance by the government, this IIT is located in Bihta, Patna, in the state of Bihar. With a student strength of over 2,000, it is ranked tenth in the all-India rankings of IITs with a score of 74.68. It boasts modern facilities, state-of-the-art equipment, machinery, and software. The institute has an excellent faculty that has a rich and wide academic and research experience. Besides, it is trained at the top-ranked Indian and international institutes.
