Differences Between JEE and NEET

Is it JEE, or is it NEET? What should you opt for? There always seems to be this dilemma plaguing students who have appeared for their Class 12. There is always a toss-up between engineering and medicine. Both these national-level qualifying exams are difficult to crack and also the most popular ones among competitive exams. Whichever you wish to go for, it’s important to be aware of the difference. Here are some main differences between JEE and NEET.

To begin with, it is important to be aware of what the two exams are all about:

What is JEE?What is JEE

Joint Entrance Examination Mains or JEE is the entrance exam for entry into top-level engineering institutes across India. This exam is carried out by the National Testing Agency (NTA). This is the qualifying exam for entry into any one of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institute of Technology (NIT), Indian Institute of Technology (IIIT), and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTI). This is conducted in two segments – JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. It is mandatory to clear the JEE Mains to take the JEE Advanced.

What is NEETWhat is NEET

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test or NEET is a national-level entrance exam for entry into undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses across the country. This exam is carried out by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is also a qualifying exam for entry into dental courses. Thus, this exam is mandatory for those who wish to pursue MBBS, MD, MS, BDS, and MDS programmes in government and/or private institutes.

Now that we know what these exams constitute, let’s look at the key differences in each.

JEE

  • It is a computer-based test or CBT
  • Qualifying exam for entry into undergraduate engineering and architecture programmes pan-India as well as for JEE Advanced
  • Paper 1: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and Paper 2: Mathematics, Aptitude, Drawing and Planning
  • There are 60 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) in this exam plus 30 questions, wherein the answer is a numerical value
  • It is held twice a year
  • Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, Urdu, and Telugu.
  • Class 12 cut-off is 75% for General category and 65% for Reserved category
  • You must appear within three years of clearing your Class 12

NEET

  • It is a pen and paper-based test
  • Qualifying exam for undergraduate medical programmes pan-India and even internationally
  • Biology, Chemistry and Physics
  • All Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • It is held once a year
  • Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu
  • Class 12 cut-off is 50% for General category, 45% for OBC and 40% for SC/ST/PWDs
  • You must be at least 17 years of age and if more than 25 years old, then subjected to the Supreme Court’s orders

Now, we have given you a fair idea of the differences between the two exams. However, we would like to mention that both of these exams are highly competitive and hence rather tough to crack. The number of limited seats further makes them tougher. Furthermore, between the two, NEET seems to have easier questions. But, as the number of medical institutes are fewer than engineering ones, it is tougher to crack NEET than JEE. This is how it’s perceived. Thus, if one has to rate the difficulty level of each exam then JEE Mains is the least difficult exam, while NEET follows at a close second. The JEE Advanced is considered the toughest of the three.

Having said that, students often get daunted by the hype created around the exams itself. But, we say, depending on the test you’re opting for, enrolling in a JEE Mains crash course online or NEET crash course online helps greatly. Taking these courses prepares you for the tests in every way. Finally, the difficulty of these exams largely depends on your skills, abilities, hard work and intelligence. Therefore, it eventually depends on you.
